Shake Things Up!

Goal 18: Shake Things Up! of The 30 Goals Challenge for Educators

“The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards.” ~Anatole France

This year’s 30 Goals Challenge theme is, “This is MY Moment.” Each goal focuses on getting educators to believe their plans of action now will lead to positive changes and transformation in their teaching and learning environments. My Reflection
One of my favorite activities on Jamie Keddie’s Lesson Stream site is Lying on the Pavement. Students walk in the classroom to the outline of a body. They enter into a discussion of how the body got there.
As November approaches, many of us will get into routines. Our learners will be used to our classroom environment, our instructional practices, the rules, and procedures. Procedures, rules, and routines are important. They help manage our classrooms. However, we need to make sure to throw a surprise into the mix to keep learners intrigued and thinking. In this lesson, the teacher is able to shake up the routine with masking tape and the moving of desks.
For this goal:
Short-term goal– For at least one class period, shake things up.
Long-term goal– Try to integrate tasks and activities in your curriculum that will surprise or shock students throughout the year.

Challenge:

Shake things up in your classroom. Any other ideas?
