“We cannot hold a torch to light another’s path without brightening our own.”~ Ben Sweetland

Teaching is a tough job with an important mission. Each year, educators are responsible for preparing students to be lifelong learners. We cannot afford to take our jobs lightly, because each time we are with our learners, we impact them. Our learners take something from us each time whether it be positive or negative. It could be a nugget of knowledge, motivation to explore, inspiration or support. If we do not actively ensure our students leave us with a positive attitude towards learning, then we may leave them with a negative impression of learning. Millions of students leave classrooms with negative impressions of learning. They think learning is tedious and boring.
The 30 Goals for Educators is away to remind us of the importance of our jobs. Each time we tackle a goal, we reflect on our teaching practice. We aim to be better educators. We rediscover our passion for teaching. Congratulations for joining me in the journey to improve our instructional practice. Even if you only accomplished 1 of the 30 goals, you should feel proud. It means that you dedicated yourself to improving as an educator and this step has impacted your students in ways you may never know. When educators continue to reflect on their practice and take actions to improving their instructional practice, this directly impacts students in positive ways. It may be that we walk into our classrooms more confident and prepared. It may be that we enjoy teaching more than we used to. It may be we understand our learners more and support their learning more effectively.
Educators are constantly battling burning out, supporting their students, engaging parents, working with administrators, and more. By attempting to connect with other educators and accomplish goals you are preparing yourself for the battles you will continuously face as an educator. Every teacher needs a support system. Every teacher needs to be connected to other educators passionate about teaching. We cannot afford to be complacent. Therefore, for the last goal I encourage you to reflect on specific battles you will face in 2013 and begin to arm yourself with resources and support in the areas you struggle with. Connect with other educators online who can offer you the support you need. Read their blogs. Ask them questions.
Thank you so much for joining me for the 3rd cycle of the 30 Goals Challenge for Educators. I hope to see you in 2013! Have a safe and happy New Year! Thank you so much for being a part of my growth as an educator. You have inspired me, supported me, enlightened me, and challenged me. I feel very blessed to connect with you.
