Let Them Speak Up #30GoalsEdu

Goal 19: Let Them Speak Up of The 30 Goals Challenge for Educators! Click the link to find out more about the 30 Goals Challenge for Educators!

Student voice is an important part of any curriculum. Without engaging a student then the learning becomes tedious, boring, and overwhelming. Students want to make a connection to their learning. They want to see how the knowledge they are acquiring relates to the world around them and how they can use it in their present and future. The problem with traditional teaching that dedicates a majority of the instructional time to lecturing from the teacher and another portion to bookwork is that the student doesn’t get to speak up, add an opinion, or contribute. When students are silent they don’t get to relate to the learning, add their experiences to the learning, or make a connection.
For goal 19, I would like to encourage you to think about the amount of instructional time you dedicate to student voice. How does this time compare to the amount of time dedicated to lecturing, bookwork, quizzes, and other tasks where students remain silent or are tied to answering only through multiple choice questions?
Many types of technologies can help us increase student input in our classes. Below are a few ideas:

Short-term– Take one class period and dedicate a majority of the time to student input. You can use any of the suggested online tools. Reflect on the outcome.
Long-term– Try incorporating more tasks and activities to increase student input in your classes. This may be uncomfortable at first, because it is a struggle for teachers to let go of the control.
